Omarchy Linux Gets a Foundation and Millions in Pledges

The Omacom Foundation is the nonprofit DHH announced on 21 August 2026 to own the Omarchy trademarks and pay for the project around them: its infrastructure, its promotion, and the open-source work the distribution rests on.

The headline figure has moved since launch. The launch post is updated in place as new patrons join, the donor count keeps growing, and the foundation has started spending: three sponsorships, three full-time hires, and one sponsorship already replaced by a salary.

What Is the Omacom Foundation?

Omacom is the name of the foundation; Omarchy is the name of the Linux distribution, and the phrase “Omarchy Foundation” that appears in some coverage refers to nothing that exists. In the launch post, DHH says he is setting it up as a nonprofit with four jobs: owning the trademarks, paying for infrastructure, promoting the work, and backing the open-source projects and developers that Omarchy is built on. The foundation page calls it the nonprofit funding the development, maintenance and spread of Omarchy. No official page states that incorporation is complete or names a jurisdiction.

The prompt for the fundraise, per the launch post, was the reception of Omarchy Quattro, the 4.0 release. Omarchy itself is assembled from three core technologies: Arch Linux, Hyprland, and Quickshell.

How Much Has the Omacom Foundation Raised?

The foundation launched on 21 August 2026 with eight Founding Patrons and $8 million in pledges. The launch post is revised each time new money arrives, and after DigitalOcean joined on 9 September 2026 it listed twelve Founding Patrons and approximately $18.5 million in pledges and donations. Hyprland: Exclusive Sponsorship of Vaxry From 10 October

Under a three-year agreement with a two-year extension option, the Omacom Foundation becomes the exclusive sponsor of Vaxry, the creator of Hyprland, on 10 October. The same deal ends the paid subscriptions to Hyprland’s Hyprperks program, so its contents open up to every user. Those terms come from the Hyprland sponsorship post published on 21 August 2026, the same day as the launch. The post states no dollar value for the deal and does not define what “exclusive” excludes; it does say Hyprland will keep accepting personal donations.

Hyprperks is described on Hyprland’s own site as a paid subscription. The sponsorship post says the deal allows the program to go free, but it gives no date for that change. The post credits 37signals, Butterfly, and Framework as the sponsors who supported Hyprland before the handover.

Why Did the Omacom Foundation Replace the Quickshell Sponsorship?

On 9 September 2026 the Omacom Foundation hired outfoxxed, the creator of Quickshell, as full-time Head of Omarchy Shell and a member of Omarchy Core, replacing the three-year Quickshell sponsorship it had announced on 24 August. The hiring post describes Shell as everything you interact with on the desktop, from the bar and menus through to notifications and widgets, with Quickshell providing the QML pieces they are built from. It also puts the plugin catalogue at close to three thousand entries, up from the thousand-plus created in Quattro’s first week.

The superseded arrangement was a “premier” Quickshell sponsorship termed for three years, with no dollar value published; that post now carries a 9 September note recording the change. The 9 September post calls outfoxxed the foundation’s second full-time hire, after Krzysztof Wilczyński, announced 3 September 2026 as Head of Omarchy Kernel. What Changes for Developers Outside Omarchy?

Two of the three core technologies in Omarchy now have their creators on funded time, and one of them has a paid tier scheduled to disappear. For anyone running Hyprland on a different distribution, the 21 August 2026 announcement says the sponsorship lets Hyprperks go free, with personal donations still accepted; the date published is for the sponsorship itself, which starts on 10 October. For anyone building on Quickshell, its creator is employed full time by the Omacom Foundation, with the 9 September post naming performance, reliability, plugin authoring, and security as the areas of work.

The third sponsorship reaches further outside Omarchy again. On 25 August 2026 the foundation became a premier sponsor of mise and of its creator jdx. mise handles language runtimes, and it wraps Omarchy’s coding-agent CLIs as stubs that install themselves the first time you run one. No dollar figure was published for this deal either.

Allocation intent for the remainder is stated in the 3 September spending post: this year’s money is to go out across 2027, 2028 and 2029 rather than sit in an endowment, which on the $13 million committed at that point meant yearly budgets of more than $4 million. What the Announcements Do Not Say
